If an item is within the selected mode’s dimensioning range, vMeasure can dimension most parcels. There are a few material and shape cases where computer-vision scanning becomes unreliable.
Items vMeasure cannot reliably dimension
- Transparent items such as clear boxes.
- Highly reflective items (mirror-like surfaces can confuse edge detection).
- Very dark, pitch-black items where the outline is hard to separate from the background.
- Perfect cone shapes where the top opening is below the minimum detectable size (traffic cones are a common example).
Minimum detectable size requirements
- The item’s height and width must be at least 3 cm for the device to identify it.
- If an item has sloping sides, the visible edge should be greater than 2 cm for reliable detection.
- Items with very low edges (below the minimum detectable size) may not be captured fully.
Rare edge case: scan succeeds, but the full item is not captured
In some cases, the scan can complete while missing a portion of the item. This is more likely with irregular shapes and transparent materials, and is most commonly seen during item master creation workflows.
How to prevent this?
- After each scan, check the blue bounding box on the Ultima touchscreen.
- Confirm the measurement only if the bounding box covers the full item before sending data to your endpoint (WMS/ERP/CRM).
