Package color plays a role in how clearly a dimensioning system identifies the outer edges of an object. Most packaging uses common colors and surface finishes that are straightforward to detect during measurement.
The main consideration appears with unusually dark surfaces, where the package boundaries become harder to distinguish.

vMeasure supports most commonly used packaging colors, including brown corrugated cartons, white cartons, colored cartons, printed packaging, and standard black packaging.
For these packages, color does not change the normal measurement workflow. You place the package in the measurement area and trigger the dimensioning process as usual.
The exception is exceptionally dark or pitch-black surfaces that provide very little visual distinction around the package edges.
Does vMeasure measure black packages?
Yes. vMeasure parcel dimensioners generally measure standard black packages.
The limitation applies to unusually deep or pitch-black surfaces. These surfaces make the package outline difficult for the dimensioning system to identify reliably.
This means black packaging itself is not the issue. The shade and surface characteristics of the package determine whether the outer edges remain clear enough for reliable dimensioning.
Why are extremely dark black packages more difficult to dimension?
vMeasure identifies the outer edges of a package to measure its length, width, and height.
With exceptionally dark surfaces, those boundaries become difficult to distinguish from the surrounding area. When the system does not identify the package edges clearly, reliable dimensioning becomes difficult.
This is why standard black packaging and extremely dark black packaging should not be treated as the same type of surface.
Does package color affect every vMeasure product in the same way?
No. Package color affects each vMeasure product differently.
For vMeasure parcel dimensioners, most commonly used package colors are supported, including standard black packaging. Exceptionally dark or pitch-black surfaces require testing.
For Pallet Ultima, colored and transparent shrink-wrapped freight is supported.
For other vMeasure dimensioning products, unusually dark packaging should be tested with the specific product planned for your workflow instead of applying the same limitation across every vMeasure system.
What should you do if you regularly handle very dark packaging?
If your operation regularly handles exceptionally dark cartons, black shrink wrap, or other unusually dark package surfaces, run a trial with the parcels or shipments you handle regularly using the vMeasure dimensioner planned for your workflow.
This gives you a clear view of how your actual packaging performs in your measurement environment before deployment.
