DIM weight or Dimensional weight pricing is a billing technique used by commercial carriers like FedEx, UPS, USPS and DHL. Instead of just looking at how much a package weighs on a scale, they look at how much space it occupies in their trucks or planes.
How DIM weight pricing is calculated?
The standard formula:

Dimensional Divisor
- Dimensions are in inches (in the U.S.)
- The divisor is usually 139 (for many U.S. carriers)
- If the dim weight is higher than the actual weight, you’re charged the dim weight.
Why DIM weight pricing matters?
Shipping companies have limited space in trucks and airplanes. A large, lightweight box (like a pillow) may weigh very little, but it takes up a lot of room. That space could have been used for heavier, more profitable cargo. So carriers calculate a “dimensional weight” to reflect the space used.
