UPS dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method that charges based on the space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. If a package is large but lightweight, you may pay based on its dimensional weight instead of its scale weight.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Measure the Package
Measure in inches:
- Length (longest side)
- Width
- Height
UPS uses outer box dimensions, and you should round each measurement up to the nearest whole inch.
Step 2: Calculate Cubic Size
Cubic Size = Length × Width × Height
Example
20″ × 16″ × 12″ = 3,840 cubic inches
Step 3: Divide by the UPS DIM Divisor
For most shipments within the U.S. via United Parcel Service:
- DIM divisor = 139
Dimensional Weight
=
Cubic Inches
139
Example:
3,840
139
=
27.6
Step 4: Compare With Actual Weight
If:
- Actual weight = 18 lbs
- DIM weight = 28 lbs
