How did a large 3PL fix inconsistent parcel measurement and improve ProShip rate shopping?

A national 3PL standardized outbound parcel dimensioning with vMeasure, giving ProShip cleaner parcel data for rating, carrier selection, and shipping cost control across its warehouse network.

Overview

A large U.S. 3PL running outbound parcel operations across more than 20 warehouses was struggling with one growing issue: parcel dimensions were not being captured consistently across sites.
That inconsistency was affecting rate shopping, carrier charges, and billing confidence. With a mix of regular and irregular parcels moving through the network, manual capture and older systems were no longer giving the business the control it needed.

To solve this, the 3PL standardized outbound parcel measurement using vMeasure Parcel Ultima, integrated directly with ProShip.

The challenge

Before the rollout, parcel dimensions entered the shipping workflow through manual steps or legacy systems that were difficult to maintain across a growing network.
That created a chain of problems:
  • inaccurate dimensional data in shipping systems
  • rate shopping decisions based on weak inputs
  • carrier audits and billing disputes after shipment
  • inconsistent measurement practices across facilities
The company had already invested in another cargo dimensioning setup, but it was not the right fit for this outbound parcel environment.

Why the issue mattered?

For a multi-warehouse 3PL, measurement errors do not stay local.
Once inaccurate parcel data enters the rating workflow, it starts affecting negotiated rates, carrier selection, and shipping cost accuracy. Across a large network, that becomes a margin and control problem, not just an operational one.

The 3PL selected vMeasure Parcel Ultima as its standard outbound parcel dimensioning system.

The rollout began as a pilot and expanded after the business validated the operational and financial impact. Today, 19 devices have been deployed across the network.

vMeasure was used across outbound touchpoints where accurate parcel dimensions directly affected shipping decisions, including regular cartons and irregular parcel flows.

Why vMeasure worked here?

vMeasure supported the parcel mix this 3PL was already handling, worked across multiple outbound workflows, and was easier to standardize across sites than the previous setup. Just as important, it integrated cleanly into the existing shipping environment.

Integration with ProShip

The ProShip integration was central to the rollout.
With vMeasure connected directly to ProShip, measured parcel dimensions flowed into the rating engine automatically. That removed manual entry and gave the shipping workflow verified dimensional data during rate shopping and carrier selection.
This improved:
  • rating accuracy
  • consistency in carrier selection
  • trust in shipping cost estimates
  • control over dimensional billing exposure

Results

After deployment, the 3PL improved outbound parcel control in three areas.

Accuracy and cost control

Cleaner dimensional data reduced billing friction and improved protection against dimensional surcharge issues.

Rate shopping confidence

ProShip received measured parcel data directly, leading to more reliable carrier comparisons.

Multi-site standardization

The business moved from inconsistent site-level practices to a more repeatable outbound measurement process across the network.

Before and after

Before After
Parcel dimensions were captured inconsistently across sites
Outbound measurement became more standardized
Rate shopping relied on weaker dimensional inputs
ProShip received measured parcel data directly
Billing issues were harder to challenge
Shipping data became more reliable and defensible
Older systems were harder to scale
vMeasure fit the outbound workflow more naturally

Strategic value

The business moved from inconsistent site-level practices to a more repeatable outbound measurement process across the network.

This rollout gave the 3PL more than better measurement. It improved the quality of shipping decisions across the network.
By standardizing parcel dimensioning and feeding verified data into ProShip, the business built a stronger outbound process for scale, cost control, and consistency.
