How Did an Omni-Channel 3PL Turn Inbound Parcel Measurement into Reliable ShipHero Master Data?

Industry: 3PL | Omni-channel | eCommerce fulfillment
Product implemented: vMeasure Parcel Ultima
Integration: ShipHero WMS
Use case: Inbound parcel dimensioning for master data accuracy and warehouse space planning
As this omni-channel 3PL expanded across multiple facilities, inbound parcel volume became harder to manage, especially during seasonal peaks. The issue started at the receiving station, where clean warehouse data should have entered ShipHero from the beginning.
Operators still measured parcels with tape and typed the values into ShipHero manually. On slower days, the process moved along. But when parcel intake increased, accuracy started depending too much on who measured the parcel, how busy the station was, and how much pressure the shift was under.
That left the 3PL with a clear problem. They needed a faster, more consistent way to capture parcel dimensions before inaccurate data entered ShipHero and affected storage planning.

What made inbound dimension data unreliable?

The issue was not only manual measurement. It was the number of small manual steps involved before a parcel record became usable inside ShipHero.
The inbound workflow depended on:
  • Manual measurement that varied from one operator to another
  • Manual entry into ShipHero, which added time at receiving
  • Operator judgment for irregular or mixed-SKU cartons
  • No fixed capture time for each parcel
When one carton was measured incorrectly, the wrong dimensions carried into item records. That created mismatches between physical parcel size and the data used for downstream warehouse decisions.
Over time, those small gaps made the master data unreliable.

Where did the space problem begin?

Warehouse space planning became harder once inaccurate dimensions entered ShipHero.
Slotting depends on knowing how much space each parcel actually needs. But when the system carried the wrong size data, the warehouse planned around numbers that did not fully match the parcels on the floor.
That created a few practical issues:
  • Some locations were assigned more space than needed
  • Certain areas became crowded sooner than expected
  • Staff had to re-slot items more often
  • The system record did not always match the actual parcel size
For a growing 3PL, this was more than a storage issue. The warehouse was making space decisions based on estimates instead of verified parcel dimensions.

What changed at the receiving stations?

The 3PL deployed 3 vMeasure Parcel Ultima units across inbound stations and integrated the dimensioning workflow directly with ShipHero.

Instead of measuring parcels with tape and typing values into the WMS, operators captured parcel dimensions through a standardized station-level process. Parcel Ultima automated both measurement and data flow, capturing regular and irregular parcel dimensions in under 2 seconds and sending the data into ShipHero without manual entry.

The purpose was not just faster measurement. It was to standardize how inbound parcel data entered the warehouse system.

What improved after automation?

The change created a cleaner and more consistent starting point for inbound operations.
Before automation, parcel dimensions depended on manual handling and manual entry. After automation, ShipHero received system-generated dimension data from the inbound station.
That improved:
  • Master data consistency for SKU and case-level records
  • Storage planning based on verified parcel dimensions
  • Inbound capture speed during seasonal volume spikes
  • Operator consistency across measurement points
  • Reduction of manual typing and measurement rework
With more reliable dimension data, the warehouse had a better foundation for slotting, space allocation, and inbound planning.

Why did this change matter beyond faster measurement?

For this 3PL, parcel dimensioning was not just a task at the receiving station. It became the data layer behind warehouse space decisions.
By capturing parcel dimensions accurately at the point of entry, the 3PL gave ShipHero cleaner records from the start.
That made inbound receiving easier to control and gave warehouse operations better data to work with as volume scaled.
If your inbound process still depends on tape measurement and manual WMS entry, your master data is already carrying avoidable errors into storage and planning workflows.
